I may get in trouble here…
I was glad when Bishop Desmond Tutu equated homophobia to apartheid. We all understand apartheid to be the heinous, policy that it was/is. We get that. Well, it may give us a clue as to how God views sin. Sin offends God’s holiness. His justice. His righteousness. Just as apartheid offends us today.
I have been a big fan of some aspects of Bishop Tutu. He has had a remarkable life. I often quote from His book, No Future Without Forgivenss. I don’t think he meant he would rather spend eternity in hell than go to heaven with a homophobic God. I think he was trying to shock us. And he did! He wanted to get our attention. He did. Let’s take a breath and think about it.
Homophobia is a terrible thing. It is am extreme aversion to homosexuality or homosexuals. Homophobia is the new “racism”.
Why does Bishop Tutu think God is homophobic? Maybe it is because God takes a dim view of men having “relations” with men or women with women. In Leviticus it says it is an “abomination” in the same way bestiality is – or child sacrifice. I hope we are horrified by bestiality and child sacrifice. We do not tolerate them – or should not. Later in Leviticus it says it is “despicable” the same as incest. That too, is not tolerated in our society. Saint Paul told us in Romans 1 that it is “unnatural” and “indecent”. homosexuality is unnatural. The human body is not anatomically fashioned for homosexuality. Please note that it is the act that is unnatural, despicable – not the person.
You can argue with me. You can disagree with me. That’s fine – but it is God who said it – not me. Take it up with Him.
If we let our culture define our values we are in trouble. I pray that Bishop Tutu has not stepped out on that slippery slope.
These unnatural acts are a sin against God. All sin is. All unrepentant, persistent sin puts us in jeopardy with God. As in Romans as they persisted in their sin, He finally “gave them over” to it. They chose hell over God.
I know Bishop Tutu saw horrible atrocities during apartheid – he suffered personally. He saw lives devastated by injustice and cruelty. I know he has seen terrible acts committed because of homophobia. However, we do not have policies of “homophobia”. One could argue that not allowing same-sex marriage is a policy of homophobia. You can take that up with God. He is the one who instituted marriage as between one man and one woman? God created humans in His own image – Genesis tells us that both male and female make up the image of God. Not male and male or female and female.
First, I do not believe God is homophobic. Second, God is love. God loves us so much that He tells us, warns us, of things that harm us. Third, He has given us a way to navigate away from the the temptations we face regardless of what they are.
When do we, as the “created”, tell the Creator what the rules are? Milton-Bradley is the creator of Monopoly. They made the rules. If you want to play the game correctly, play by the rules. Simple. If you don’t want to play by the rules, that is your choice but the game won’t make any sense.
